King Size Bedsteads

Although the word bedstead may conjure up a vision of a very solid, large bed, bedstead is merely another word for bed frame.  A kingsize bedstead come in a wide variety of styles.  The two most common types of bedstead are the standard and the platform frame.

Standard frames consists of a headboard or head rail, two side rails and a footboard or foot rail.  In king size bedsteads, there is a center support that runs between the headboard and footboard of the frame.  Bed slats between the two side rails provide horizontal support for the mattress and box springs.  Some king size bedsteads have more than four legs supporting them.  An extra leg may be placed in the middle of the center support to help prevent sagging.

Platform bedsteads usually don’t require box springs.  Instead, a solid board between the for rails supports the mattress.  Platform style bedsteads are popular in Europe, Asia and Japan.  They are readily available, but less popular in the US.  King size bedsteads in the platform style usually need some reinforcing framework under the platform since the size of the board makes it subject to sagging.
Platform style bedsteads may have legs, or may be built with a base that goes around all four sides.

One type of platform bedstead is suspended from the ceiling.  It may have one suspension point where a cable from each corner of the bed is brought to a central point or it may require four attachments into ceiling joists.  Some of these king size bedsteads may be round rather than rectangular.  This type of platform bedstead is called a floating bed.  Floating platform beds need to be installed by a qualified carpenter.

Most platform beds are made of wood rather than metal, although some may be made of acrylic,  Lacquer over MDF, a type of fiberboard, is another fairly common finish.  Metal bedsteads are usually standard frames.  Some platform beds may have a metallic or foil finish, but the the frame itself is wood or fiberboard.

Shopping for a kingsize bedstead is easy.  The size is popular in the US where newer homes often have very large master bedrooms.  Local furniture and mattress stores usually have a selection of frames in king size and there are lots of frames on display on the Internet.
